Principal's Address - Mr. George HoytGood evening parents, guardians, Harry Ainlay staff and, of course, our special guests ...... The graduating students of Harry Ainlay.
This evening’s awards ceremony is a celebration of your accomplishments from the last school year. We are all here to recognize the hard work and dedication you have demonstrated to achieve success in academic courses and programs at Harry Ainlay. The road to success can be challenging and at times frustrating, however with perseverance, determination and support, you have succeeded. This support is very important and comes from different people. The outstanding teaching faculty at Harry Ainlay are dedicated to teach and improve your learning. Your parents and guardians are committed to guide and provide a listening ear for you as you work your way through high school. so, please join me in thanking those teachers, parents, guardians and others who challenge, support and cared you over the past year. To quote--Aristotle: “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” "In omnibus excelsior" Excellence in all things... is a strong statement and at Harry Ainlay we believe in offering many programs, courses and opportunities for students to be successful in,to be excellent in,to be happy in. You have demonstrated excellence and we are here to celebrate those accomplishments. Please be proud of your success, be proud of your effort and be proud of your self. Congratulations to all .... This was volunteer work on all the students part. It was a great success and so incredibly professionally done that it will be talked about for years to come.

Michael Woollet Art Award - Ms. Tania UnguranIf you had approached Zenakia Jensen back in grade 10, she may have bit your head off or scowled at you..... But that was all a cover because she was always so nervous about letting people see what an amazing artist she truly was. She also challenged yourself on so many levels, more specifically learning the anatomy of both humans and animals, and discovering new ways to merge these images and ideas. In the art studio, you would always find her searching through the rubble, digging through the garbage, looking for any recycled material she could forge and create sculptural piece. I remember the frustrations, the smiles and the successes that came about creating her eagle in flight piece. I can't tell you how many times that darn head fell off, and how many different types of glue we tried. In the end, she didn't just give up on it, but instead challenged her self to NOT throw it against the wall… LOL! I remember one afternoon having a conversation with her, looking at her portfolio for grade 12 and psycho analyzing the deep meaning behind some of her pieces. She would have the serious look on her face and then two seconds later start laughing. For an artist, I always laugh because she had such a typical type A personality. She liked things to be a certain way, and was always trying to tidy up the studio. She also liked keeping kids accountable whenever she saw them doing something goofy. She wouldn't scare away from constructive feedback or criticism, and challenged herself on every level to better every piece. All of the art students thought she would definitely be going to an art school, but her heart always belonged to theater… Not as an actress up on the stage, but instead, in the dark background creating the props that made that actor or actress look phenomenal. Her understanding of skeletal structures helped her in so many ways to build amazing props for drama productions last year. This year, she's at Grant McEwan University working towards a degree in theatre tech. We the artists in the studio are so proud of her and the journey she took over these past three years to get her to where she is today. I will always miss our morning conversations, or when she would bring in boxes of items and joked that her mom was a bit of a packrat. In the art studio, we love pack rats! Congratulations again on winning this award!
Oliver Lantz Science 30 Award - Mr. Rob MartensRajvir Teja was a model student. Conscientious, diligent and always attentive, Rajvir was one of those student who never said much in class, but instead let his actions and outstanding results speak volumes for him. He was the top student in a year of very bright Science 30 students. scoring 100 on the provincial diploma exam. I am very pleased and feel privileged to have had him in my class.
Raymond Webb Social Studies Award - Ms. Allison GreckolIt is a great honour to be here to present this award to Mr. Eden Sharp this evening. I was fortunate enough to have taught Eden Social Studies, and I will begin by stating that he is without doubt one of the very finest students I have ever taught.
Mr. Sharp - honestly, his name is too perfect not to make note of - Mr. Sharp has the amazing gift that all social studies students share ... the ability to process, retain, synthesize and analyze an enormous volume of information that to many may seem nebulous, abstract, or "just a matter of opinion." Indeed, it is not. very brightest minds in social studies base their opinions on a rigorous evaluation of data, history, and thus their views and analysis thereby transcend the realm of mere "opinion" Mr. Sharp was such a student. He is thoughtful, precise, articulate, and his writing betrays wisdom well beyond his years. Rare as all this may be in student, Mr. Sharp graces the classroom with qualities even more important that shine through all that he does he is relentlessly curious, impeccably polite, that is, politic, and has restless enthusiasm that is utterly contagious. He has a rare and invaluable gift, he actually causes those around him to be better. You are a fine young man, and I cannot imagine a more deserving student. Thanks so much for all that you brought to my classroom, what you shared with your fellow classmate, and thanks in advance for all that I anticipate you doing in the realm of your public life. Indeed, teenagers often get a bad rep, and sometimes deservedly so, but as I imagine myself an old woman, much older than now, sitting in a big dilapidated chair watching the news. I am ever so comforted by the hope that I might witness "here with Professor Sharp, or the Mr. Sharp, President of the Bank of Canada, or Justice Sharp, or perhaps Prime Minister Sharp, you get the idea. Congratulations, best wishes in your future studies and endeavors, we are all very proud of you and your achievement. French Language Arts Award - Ms. Gabrielle EngliThis year's recipient is Sophia Parrila.Sophia Parrila est une jeune femme qui est non seulement douée académiquement mais a aussi un caractère remarquable. Elle démontre de façon consistente de l'initiative, la responsabilité, l'intégrité, une bonne éthique de travail, tout ce qui lui a permis de se donner du succès en FLA et dans ses autres cours. De plus, son attitude de coopération et collaboration et ses efforts continuels font qu'elle mérite ce prix.
CTS Communication Technology Award - Mr. Jason DolezalThis year’s Communication Technology award goes to an exceptionally deserving student. For three years, she has put together an impressive portfolio that includes a very diverse collection of video products. From an anti-distracted driving PSA to a catchment area video that involved interviewing 17 principles, not to mention the different videos produced for Harry Ainlay events such as the TVT opening ceremonies and the video for the awards presentation at Ainlay, this student has dedicated literally hundreds of hours in front of a video screen tweaking clips and manipulating audio segments until the finished product captured the story that her original vision saw. She was always professional, polite, and was a pleasure to work with on these many projects. She truly strives for excellence in all of her work. She is now studying at NAIT, further refining her exceptional skills in their Digital Media program. Congratulations Dawson Wallace!
